Ecco che anche gli elefanti potrebbero smettere di marciare, lasciando spazio stupiti e commossi al dramma umano tra vinti e vincitori , in guerra e in amore. Ritroviamo il soffocante gigantismo voluto da Giuseppe Verdi e l’effetto schiacciante sull’anima dei giovani protagonisti, nell’originale riduzione e nell’arrangiamento per organico strumentale a dieci parti reali, nello stile impetuoso del direttore Giambattista Giocoli , nei versi detti e sussurrati da Sandra Cavallini , nella voluta irregolarità metrica del libretto di Antonio Ghislanzoni . Accenti lirici, tratti trionfali e improvvise sospensioni svelano le delicate profondità dell’opera.
